BMI Calculator
Calculate Your BMI (Body Mass Index)
Put simply, the Body Mass Index (commonly referred to as BMI) is one method of determining body fat and is frequently used as a relatively straightforward way to identify potential weight problems in adults. BMI is a calculation of relative height and weight, and while not a direct measurement of body fat, it has been shown to correlate closely to more direct body fat measurements such as underwater weighing and dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Therefore, BMI is an easy and inexpensive method of screening individuals for weight problems and their risk of obesity –related health problems.
On its own, BMI is not a complete evaluation of obesity or health risk factors. It may overestimate body fat for individuals who are extremely muscular or who have swelling from fluid retention, for instance, and may underestimate body fat in older people or in those who are losing muscle mass. Therefore, it is an excellent first step for individuals who are concerned about their weight, but a routine screening at a physician’s office will likely include additional evaluations such as waist measurement, which can provide another accurate assessment of obesity-related health risks.
Dr. Wiljon Beltre, Board Certified lead surgeon, and his caring, compassionate staff of weight loss experts at Beltre Bariatrics Center for Metabolic and Obesity Surgery in Maitland, Florida, are committed to offering you every tool you need to understand what obesity is, the health problems it can cause, and the options available to you for achieving significant weight loss and resolution of obesity-related health concerns. We offer a proven, comprehensive approach to weight loss designed to educate you from the start and support you for as long as your weight loss journey lasts to maximize your chances of successful, long-term weight loss.
BMI Calculator
If you are concerned about your weight, the easiest first step you can take is to determine your BMI. This can be done by entering your height, weight, age, and gender into an online BMI calculator. The calculator will generate a single number: your BMI. Using the chart below, you can use this number to determine your weight classification.
BMI
If your BMI is 30 or above, with or without obesity-related health problems, you may be a candidate for metabolic or bariatric surgery with Dr. Beltre at Beltre Bariatrics Center for Metabolic and Obesity Surgery. BMI alone, however, is only one method of screening for obesity-related risk factors and not the only determining eligibility factor for weight loss surgery. If you believe you may be a candidate for metabolic or bariatric surgery, your primary care physician or Dr. Beltre will perform a more thorough medical evaluation and health screenings, potentially including a waist circumference measurement, “skin fold” thickness measurement, diet and activity evaluation, family history, and other appropriate evaluations to determine your eligibility for surgery.
