If you’ve ever been up watching late-night infomercials you know that there are dozens of products on the market that promise to jump-start your metabolism and help you shed those unwanted pounds. The question is, do any of these products really work? Is there really a way to get your body to burn more calories so you can lose weight easily and with less work? There is good news and there is bad news.

Yes, you can do things to increase the rate of your metabolism but no, there is no magic pill that will enable your metabolism to burn dozens of pounds off your figure without putting in an ounce of effort. If you’ve been wondering how your metabolism affects your weight loss goals and how you can get your metabolism to increase the amount of calories you consume, the following information will help.

What is Your Metabolism?

Your metabolism is your body’s way of converting food into energy. The process happens in the muscles and organs of your body and helps you burn the calories you consume. The faster your metabolism runs, the more calories your body will burn.

When you refer to your “basal” metabolism you are referring to the number of calories that your body needs to sustain itself. For most individuals, the basal metabolism accounts for approximately 75 percent of the calories that are used on a daily basis. The “faster” your metabolism is, the more calories you will need to maintain your “basal” metabolism count.

Boosting Your Metabolism

Here’s the good news. There are definitely some things you can do to speed up your metabolism. The faster your metabolism is, the more calories you will be able to burn on a daily basis. If you want your metabolism in tip-top shape and want to burn calories more quickly, here are some tips to help.

Don’t Starve Yourself

Never, ever consume less than 1,200 calories in a single day. I know, this may go against everything you have been taught but it is the truth. If your calorie consumption goes below 1,200 calories in a day your body will go into “starvation” mode and your basal metabolism will go down. This means it will be harder for you to lose weight in the long run because your metabolism will actually be running slower.

Get Exercise

Exercise is a great way to speed up your metabolism. Aerobic and strength training exercises both have benefits when it comes to increasing your metabolic rate. If you want to keep your metabolism in peak performance, make sure you exercise on a daily basis. Even if it’s just twenty minutes a day, it will go a long way in increasing the number of calories your metabolism burns.

Drink Plenty of Water

If you really want to give your metabolism a boost, drink plenty of water. How much is enough? Some experts say you should consume at least sixty ounces each day. Your metabolism needs plenty of water in order to function properly. And remember, coffee and tea do not count for your daily water intake!
