Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome: What Are the Signs and Symptoms?

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that can impacts a great number of women. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is sometimes behind a lot of the issues that women face, such as weight gain and heavy periods. If you suspect you might have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, we advise you to consult with a doctor in order to get the right diagnosis so you can work toward solutions for your comfort and the impact the condition may have on your body. There are often a few difficulties associated with this condition, but with education and effort, it’s one you can manage successfully.

The Background

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome is a condition that impacts the hormones in your body. This is why some of the symptoms and signs include acne that is sometimes difficult to manage, abnormal growth of body hair, and weight gain. Excess insulin is believed to be one of the driving factors behind this condition; excess insulin production can lead to insulin resistance and hinder the body from processing the substance effectively.

What Are Common Signs?

Irregular Periods

When you’re young, irregular periods can be quite common. However, if you still notice that your periods are irregular and fluctuate in heaviness from one month to another, then you might want to consider getting checked for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Some women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome only have half a dozen cycles each year.

Conception

If you’re trying to conceive and find that it’s difficult, then Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome might be the issue. Since ovulation is irregular, it becomes harder to conceive because there aren’t as many eggs released as there are with normal cycles. Even though you might get your period like usual, your body might not ovulate like it should, which means that you wouldn’t know that you have infertility issues until you’ve tried to get pregnant for a while.

Hair Growth

A few hairs in odd places can be normal. Women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome often see greater quantities of hair in unexpected places. Another sign of this condition is thinning growth on the scalp.
